Getting Started Series:

Getting Started - Using Windows Explorer

Pre-requisite:– none required.

Number of classes:– 2

The purpose of this class is to help identify the major components within the computer and understand the importance of them. The second portion is all hands-on practical use of Windows Explorer on the computer where you will create, copy, rename and delete Folders and Files. By getting to grips with Folder/File Management, you will gain confidence in always being able to find your saved files. Bring you USB Flash Drive to store some files.

Do you need to know:

  • what a hard disk really is
  • what the CPU does in your computer
  • how to alter the appearance of the Desktop
  • the "power" you have with Windows Explorer
  • how to create Folders with Windows Explorer
  • why the RAM is so important in your computer
  • how to copy or delete Files with Windows Explorer
  • how to transfer Files to and from your USB Flash Drive
  • how to carry out maintenance and manage your computer
  • how to organise your photos and documents using Windows Explorer

Getting Started - Preventative Maintenance

Pre-requisite:– MUST be competent in Folder/File Management. These skills are covered in the Getting Started – Explorer session.

Number of classes:– 2

Using Windows or Freeware (provided during class) Software.

The purpose of this class is to help understand the "nasties" that can "attack" your computer and cause all sorts of weird things to happen to it. Using Windows programs and some easily obtained Freeware programs, you will be able to build a reasonable defence and preventative maintenance system on your computer. During these sessions you will be installing programs and trying them out. Bring you USB Flash Drive to store some files. The last portion of the second session is intended to be a workshop of shared experiences - you ask and we will provide an answer.

Do you need to know:

  • how to reduce the risk of getting a virus
  • how to reduce the risk of getting spyware
  • why your hard disk is constantly being fragmented
  • what a virus is and what it can do to your computer
  • how to clean out temporary files from your computer
  • what spyware is and how it can infect your computer
  • how to stop programs auto-starting and hogging RAM
  • how to de-fragment your hard disk for better performance
  • what temporary files are and how they affect your computer

Getting Started - Managing and Editing Pictures

Pre-requisite:– MUST be competent in Folder/File Management. These skills are covered in the Getting Started – Explorer session.

Using Windows or Freeware (provided during class) Software.

The purpose of this class is to take away the fear of dealing with pictures. These could be from your digital camera, scanned images or screen captures (you will be shown how) from the Internet. Have you ever sent just four pictures of the kids to Nana and she has told you it took over an hour to get the email? Using Windows programs and some easily obtained Freeware programs, you will be able to realise that the solution is pretty easy. During these sessions you will be installing programs and trying them out. Bring your camera and USB Flash Drive to store some files. The last portion of the second session is intended to be a workshop of shared experiences - you ask and we will provide an answer.

Do you need to know how to:

  • “square up” an angled picture
  • optimise pictures to use in a web page
  • resize pictures for sending with an email
  • transfer pictures to your USB Flash Drive
  • view thumbnail images and full sized pictures
  • view pictures in a slide show on your computer
  • resize pictures to use as your Desktop Wallpaper
  • get your pictures from the camera to the computer
  • alter the lighting in a picture (brightness and contrast)

Getting Started - Basic Word Processing

Pre-requisite:– MUST be competent in Folder/File Management. These skills are covered in the Getting Started – Explorer session.

Using Open Office Freeware (provided during class) Software.

The purpose of this class is to increase you confidence and ability to produce a visually pleasing document. Bring your USB Flash Drive to store some files.

Do any of the following pose a bit of a mystery to you:

  • correctly editing your text
  • using the show/hide function
  • saving and closing documents
  • choosing and using the right font
  • using the spell checker or thesaurus
  • switching from UPPER to lower case
  • previewing and printing your documents
  • getting move or copy to do what you want
  • starting a new series of text on a new page
  • understanding and using the correct setup defaults

  • saving and closing your spreadsheet
  • easily moving around the spreadsheet
  • correctly editing the data in your cells

  • understanding the advantages of using a spreadsheet
